Hockey World Cup: India’s defeat, 0-1 defeat in the quarter finals

The Indian women’s hockey team lost 0-1 to host Spain in their crossover match at the FIH Women’s Hockey World Cup 2022. India needed to win the match at any cost to reach the semi-finals. However, the defeat has paved the way for India’s future.

Marta Segu (57 ‘) scored the only goal of the match. The Indian women’s team will play against Canada in the next 9th to 16th match.

The Indian women’s hockey team lost to New Zealand in the third match of the World Cup. New Zealand won the match 4-3 on Thursday, July 7 in Amstelveen, Netherlands. Thus, Team India could not win a single match in Group B. Earlier, the Indian team could only draw against England and China. The score in both matches was 1-1.

India needed to win the match at any cost to reach the semi-finals. Team India then had to play a crossover match against Space to reach the semi-finals, in which they lost.

What are the rules of crossover matches?

According to the format of the tournament, the 16 teams are divided into four groups of four teams each. The top teams in each pool will advance directly to the semifinals, while the second and third place teams will crossover.

In the crossover, the second-placed team in Pool A will face the third-ranked team in Pool D, while the third-ranked team in Pool A will face the second-ranked team in Pool A.

Similarly, the second place team in Group B will face the third place team in Group C. The third-ranked team in Pool B will play the second-ranked team in Pool C. The winners of these four matches will advance to the semifinals.
