Bernardinelli-Bernstein breaks past records

Named C/2014 UN271 or the Bernardinelli-Bernstein, the comet has broken the record of its ancestor concerning size. The record was recently held by comet C/2002 VQ94, which was found in 2002 by the Lincoln Near-Earth Asteroid Research (LINEAR) project and had a core estimating around 96 kilometers across. With respect to Bernardinelli-Bernstein, it is moving at a speed of 35,405 kilometers and it requires roughly 3,000,000 years to finish one circle around the sun, the researchers of the review noted in The Astrophysical Journal.

The comet was serendipitiously found by space experts Pedro Bernardinelli and Gary Bernstein in 2010. The couple observed the comet when they were going through recorded pictures from the Dark Energy Survey at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory in Chile. At that point, the comet was around 4.8 billion kilometers from the Sun. Curiously, the comet, which arose out of the oort cloud in our nearby planet group, has been falling toward the sun for around 1,000,000 years now and is right now under 3.2 billion kilometers from the Sun.

Stargazer David Jewitt from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) said, “This comet is in a real sense a hint of something larger for a huge number of comets that are too weak to even think about finding in the more far off pieces of the planetary group”. In the interim, the comet is encountering temperature of – 211 degrees Celsius, which is still warm to the point of causing it to vanish accordingly making a noticeable tail.
