Cognizant Issues 25% on Base Pay for Employees in Philippines and India Amid Coronavirus Lockdown

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asked the nation’s 1.3 billion people to remain indoors for three weeks in the largest lockdown anywhere, closing down Asia’s third-largest economy and leaving hundreds of thousands of economically vulnerable Indians without work.

The Philippines Congress earlier this week gave President Rodrigo Duterte extra emergency powers in an attempt to avoid chaos from a fast spread of COVID-19. It was the first Southeast Asian country to issue lockdown directives.

In India, where the New Jersey-based firm employs around 203,700 staff, the home confinement has thrown life for many into chaos as access to groceries and other fundamentals has become difficult.

India’s significant outsourcing sector has been struggling with the work-from-home situation, caught unawares as companies try to determine business continuity programs.

Cognizant, which in India has enabled work from home practices by providing new laptops and encrypting desktops for employees, in addition to provisioning additional bandwidth connectivity.

“The company is suffering from the effects of this public health emergency on the demand as well as fulfillment sides of our operations, from London to Mumbai to Manila and New York,” Humphries stated.
